About Oregon's TBI Team

The Oregon Traumatic Brain Injury Educational Consulting Team is a multidisciplinary group trained in pediatric brain injury, funded through Oregon Department of Education’s regional programs for low-incidence disabilities. Follow the link to see the brochure and seminar shedule.

Oregon TBI Team Members work within their districts, counties, region, or across the state to support educators and families of students with TBI.  TBI team members work to guide district teams to provide training for staff and families who support students from 0‐21 with TBI, and offer follow-up coaching using evidence-based practices including attending meetings, assisting with reentry, programming, transition, demonstration and feedback of evidence-based techniques for teachers of students with TBI.  They offer evidence-based information and advice on supporting students from the time of injury through transition following high school.

TBI Coaches/consultants gather and report the regional data needed to continuously improve their own outcomes, determine program success, and improve student outcomes.

Oregon TBI Team members also provide capacity building on topics, such as:

  • The effects of traumatic brain injury on school performance
  • 504 & Special Education process and eligibility for students with TBI
  • Behavior management
  • Social adjustment
  • Educational accommodations
  • Instructional strategies
  • Transition planning

Deborah Ettel, PhD, leads the Oregon TBI Team and serves as TBI Education Coordinator for the state of Oregon.  Dr. Ettel has worked for over twelve years in public schools as a school psychologist and five years in university settings teaching research methods courses in education. She has recently served as an Advanced Prevention Science Methodologist for the University of Oregon's Child & Family Center. She has co-authored peer-reviewed articles on outcomes for students with TBI, and a book chapter on best practices for schools in serving students with brain injuries in the upcoming edition of Brain Injury Medicine.
