Mild TBI and Post-Concussion Syndrome

Students with a minor head injury or any trauma to the brain should be monitored for:

  • Reduced attention and concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Emotional/personality changes
    • Decreased frustrtion tolerance
    • Irritability
    • Anxiety
    • Overreaction to events
    • Depression
  • Cognitive changes
    • Reduced reasoning and problem solving
    • Difficulty following directions
    • Misunderstanding what is said by others
    • Difficulty expressing thoughts verbally
  • Social/behavioral changes
    • Impulsive of inappropriate social behavior
    • Reduced judgment
    • Decreased insight into self or others
    • Difficulty establishing and maintaining relationships
    • Difficulty following through with responsibilities at work or home
  • Physical complaints
    • Headaches
    • Nausea
    • Dizziness/balance problems
    • Muscle weakness
    • Numbness and tingling
    • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
    • Blurred vision
    • Ringing in ears
  • Denial or lack of awareness of deficits
  • Difficulty at school/job

If ANY of these symptoms are observed, further evaluation or consultation should be obtained.
