Study Strategies for Executive Functions
The following note-taking and study strategies are suggested to aid executive function in students with TBI. The effectiveness of any strategy should be evaluated for each student.
Chunking
Organizing, condensing, and rewriting notes to reduce the amount of material.
Cornell notes
Note-taking with an emphasis on key words and reduced writing. Also called “Two Column” notes.
Rehearsal
Repetition, studying by speaking aloud.
Elaboration
Finding connections in the material to be learned by linking the information to prior knowledge or other material read previously or the world in general. Linkages may be made either in text or graphically.
SQ3R
Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review: A technique to help study the information in textbooks. The student surveys or looks over the material, develops questions about the material, re-reads the material, recites key points, and then reviews the information before moving on to a new section.
