Speaker: Katy O'Brien, PhD, CCC-SLP

DESCRIPTION

Return to play laws in all 50 states guide return to sport for students with concussion, but very few address return to learn (RTL). Critical elements of RTL include formation of RTL teams, use of valid measurement tools, monitoring for management, and selection of accommodations tailored to student needs. This presentation will cover current evidence in each of these domains with a focus on application and opportunities to improve care for students with concussion.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize challenges in management of concussion in elementary and middle school students.
  2. Identify the four critical areas of the return to learn process for students with concussion, namely: return to learn teams, outcome measurement, ongoing monitoring and management, and tailored accommodations.
  3. Describe areas of education, assessment, and treatment where RTL team members can be involved with other interdisciplinary team members in the management of pediatric concussion.
  4. Explain how to determine accommodations appropriate for meeting the varied needs of students with concussion.
